Throughout your life, you had taught us many things.
How to live, how to love, how to be positive, patient and respectful.
But mostly, you taught us the love of G-D and the meaning of love and loving.
Your fond memories are numerous and indescribable.
Though your are not among us, you are always with us in our hearts, thoughts, and dreams.
In your eyes, we were all the same, precious.
You always saw beauty and the best qualities in others, as well as wished the best for others.
Mama Bozorg's family was from Kashan, Iran. Her mother, Miriam, was born in the city of Kashan in 1886. She was the daughter of Ester Ben Elyahoo and Asher Ben Yoosef Assurian. Asher built a synagoge in Kashan that was named "Bet Haknesset Asher Ben Yoosef." Asher was born in Shiraz, Iran, and later moved to Kashan. Miriam was married at the age of fourteen to Haji Rabbi Amirian, who was nineteen. Together they had seven children, three boys and four girls:
Shimoon, Negar, Khorshid, Gilan, Monavar, Elyahoo, and Asher
Unfortunately, Miriam passed on when she was 39 years old. Throughout her short life, she was a professional rug weaver, specializing in silk rugs. When she was thirteen years old, she wove a 6' x 9' silk rug that was later taken to England by her brother, where their cousins lived. This rug was signed "Miriam Assurian" on the top border of the rug. This rug presently hangs in the Museum of London (see picture below).
Khorshid Mama Bozorg Harounian (our Big Mama) was a well-educated woman of her time with an amazing memory. She studied at the Alliance School in Kashan nearly 100 years ago, where she learned to read and write Farsi, Hebrew, and French. Throughout her life she raised seven educated children, teaching them to embrace Judaism and love for Israel. Tzedakah and unity were at the forefront of her teachings and her golden heart reached out to those in need. Through her words, she instilled a sense of kindness and compassion in her children.
